Tomorrow (Sunday) we walk our LONGEST
training walk in Nelson County. We have trained in cold
weather, I think we had two days of 60 degree weather, and
it figures that our longest walk would be in heat which is
the most difficult condition under which to walk. So we’re
headed down to Wintergreen today to spend the night so we
can start walking EARLY Sunday morning. I’ll let you know
how it goes. |

As I mentioned last time, this past week was
full of various events marking ceremonial points of the
year. But our week was clouded by the events at Virginia
Tech. The JMU campus, in a show of solidarity, suddenly
turned into a campus of maroon and orange. During this time
we had Catie Curtis on campus and she participated in some
of the tributes paid to Tech. She was deeply moved, as were
we all, by the outpouring of feeling around campus. Many of
us were also full of anger that every idiot that can manage
to walk into a gun shop is allowed to purchase a gun in
Virginia. |

Catie performed two shows for the Faculty
Women’s Caucus and she blew everyone out of the park. We
had around 600 people the first night and about 400 the
second. The audience response to Catie’s spoken words (and
songs) was overwhelming. It was a good high, but
emotionally exhausting.
It’s been an emotional time and walking
through Nelson County will be another. But, as Catie
continues to remind us, we have to keep opening ourselves to
new experiences. The challenge is in living through the
pain and/or living with the happiness. |

If I survive Sunday, I’ll be back to you next week.
