Letter to Casey

2 September 1995

6 July 2005

She looked up at me for one last time

with those eyes that never stopped trusting

Because I had never given her reason not to believe in me

Eyes that could no longer see because the tumor

had taken away her vision.

But I had seen those eyes too many times over the years

and I knew what they were saying

“You’ve got my back”, she said silently

“Forever”, I replied

And then she was gone

She always called herself  “Casey, the Great”

No argument there from me or anyone else she met

The twinkle in her eye as she teased me or outran me

being what I missed most the last months

both of us always knowing that she was superior

I am in love with her and always will be

The one thing in my life that never let me down

And now, deep in the inner soul, I feel alone

People tell me that she will stay with me in some way

for the days that remain

But I’m just not sure that I want to wake up without her

because who is going to sleep with me at night

while pushing me across the bed until she is comfortable

Who will be there to kiss me awake in the mornings

who is going to love me unconditionally

And who is going to assume absolutely without reasoning

That I will always love her unconditionally

I’ve got your back, love, wherever you are

 -Anne
